“Watching You”

A few years ago, we took a group out on a Grizzly Photo Safari in Central BC., in mid-September. Everyday we would spend the day out on the river with a guide in flat bottom boats slowly scouring the shoreline for bears. The salmon were just starting to run so now was the time the bears would be making their trek down from higher elevations to the river to fatten up on the high protein fish needed for their upcoming winter hibernation. Since we were the first group out for the season, we were likely the first humans these little cubs had ever seen. Adult bears normally don’t look you right in the eye, as that is a sign of aggression. But these curious little cubs were fixated on us and couldn’t take their eyes off of us! I’m not sure who was more curious, us or them! What a treat it was to watch them interact with one another and to witness their daily discovering antics, in this their natural environment they call home.
